Sales Tax
Why is Energetix Charging Me Tax?
In 2018, the United States Supreme Court ruled in South Dakota v. Wayfair that states may require businesses to collect and remit sales tax on purchases shipped to customers in their state, even if the business does not have a physical presence there.
As a result, Energetix is required to collect sales tax in many states unless a valid state-issued tax exemption certificate is on file for your account.
I am a Business or Non-Profit that is Tax-Exempt and was Charged Tax. Can I Receive a Refund on the Taxes Charged to My Order?
If you had a valid tax exemption certificate on file with Energetix when your order was placed and were charged sales tax, please contact our Client Care team at [email protected]. We will review your account and, if your tax-exempt status is confirmed, we will issue a refund for the tax charged.
Tax-exempt status must be verified before an order is placed to remove sales tax at checkout. If exemption documentation is submitted after an order has already been placed, it will apply to future qualifying orders but may not apply retroactively to prior orders.
Why Do I Need a Tax Exemption Certificate?
Energetix is required by law to collect sales tax on taxable orders unless we have a valid tax exemption certificate on file for your account. Submitting a current and properly completed exemption certificate allows us to process your orders without charging sales tax when applicable. If we do not have a valid certificate on file at the time of purchase, sales tax will be added to your order.
What If I Already Submitted a Tax Certificate?
We periodically review exemption certificates on file to ensure they remain valid and compliant with state requirements. If your certificate has expired, is incomplete, or no longer meets state guidelines, we may request updated documentation. To avoid interruptions or unexpected tax charges, please ensure your exemption certificate remains current and accurate. If we notify you that an updated certificate is needed, please submit the new documentation as soon as possible.
How Do I Submit My Tax Exemption Certificate?
Users may submit via the account dashboard or through CertExpress
Please ensure the certificate is properly completed and that all required fields are filled out. Doing so significantly increases the likelihood that the certificate will be accepted as valid.
Do I Need a Separate Certificate for Each State I Operate In?
Yes, each state has its own regulations about tax exemptions. Some states even require specific certificate subcategories, so it’s essential that you provide the correct documentation.
Does Tax Exemption Apply to All Products?
Tax exemptions vary by state. Always make sure your certificate(s) are valid for the state(s) you operate in.
How Long is My Certificate Valid?
The duration of a tax exemption certificate varies. Some will expire after a certain period, depending on the state. If your certificate is about to expire, we will send you an email notifying you with instructions on how to submit an updated version.
Do I Need a Tax Exemption Certificate to Become a Client?
No, you do not need a certificate to become a client. While that was our policy previously, it is no longer the case. All new clients will receive a request from Avalara to submit a tax exemption certificate.
